Alexis Mata explores what happens at the intersection between computer-generated imagery and human, hand painted art. Using AI generated images and digital image manipulation in the initial stages of his process, he renders the final image in painstaking detail by hand with oil paint on the canvas, thereby reintroducing the human into the digital. However, his final work on the canvas is not one of harmony between man and machine; glitches abound, subjects stretch, and reality seems to fall apart. Beautiful landscapes and baroque flower paintings, usually the epitome of the beautiful and decorative, decompose as if infected by a virus. Sometimes even using custom shaped canvases to enhance his glitch effects, Alexis Mata emphasizes that no matter how established a system is and no matter how much we put it on a pedestal, it is always prone to failure, to decay and to dissolution. Born in 1981, Alexis Mata lives and works in Mexico City. He has exhibited in galleries and museums across the world since 2009, including Mexico City Museum, CECUT Museum in Tijuana, Mexico, Galerie Zberro in Paris, AADK in Murcia, Spain, FU Gallery in Miami, Florida and Soze Gallery in LA.
